Artist and filmmaker Lynn Hershman Leeson has been ahead of the art world for the majority, if not the entirety, of her career. From her early explorations engaging with questions of the body and identity in relation to new technologies to her more recent engagements with artificial intelligence and genetics, Hershman Leeson has consistently pushed the needle forward, despite being overlooked for much of her five-decade-long career. She was 73 when ZKM Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe mounted the first comprehensive survey of her work. Her pioneering use of AI and custom software seems to have finally met its moment, widely embraced by younger audiences accustomed to technology, digital media and its consequences.
