“America’s Finest” Visits Germany

interactive video installation

An exhibition employee examines the interactive video installation America's Finest.

Now on display at Bilderschlachten (Image Battles) at Kunsthalle Dominikanerkirche in Osnabrueck, Germany, America’s Finest (1993-5) utilizes an M-16 rifle and manipulated optics to question the identity of agressor and victim and the role played by images of war in the psyche of the observer.

According to Lynn’s America’s Finest web page, which also contains a video narrated by the artist,

“America’s Finest is a camera gun designed to document the horrors of our century perpetrated by weapons and translated into memory through the media. When the trigger is squeezed, the viewer is pasted within the gunsite. The image is captured in miniature. This fades into other scenes; ghost-like segments overlay each other. The viewer experiences immersion, loss of control and transformation into a floating non-body image, which revives, is reborn and fades again.”

Bilderschlachten was organized in cooperation with the European Media Art Festival and runs from 22 April 2009 to 4 October 2009.
